Top-prospect Spencer Jones has been on a tear to start his 2024 season. Do his stats make him worthy of a mid-season promotion?

The Somerset Phenom

Spencer Jones had one heck of an April. Since returning from a calf strain on April 13th, the #2 Yankees prospect proceeded to tear it up with the AA Somerset Patriots. Over 12 games, he slashed .320/.382/.540 with 6 of his 16 hits going for extra bases. This type of line gets chalked up for many hitters as an unsustainable hot streak, but to Jones, this is just the status quo. On Monday, MLB posted a tweet highlighting the continued success Jones has found to start his professional career, and, well, the numbers speak for themself.

With stats like that, fans have started discussing whether he’s ready for the pros. The idea has gotten enough traction that even beat writer Bryan Hoch wrote an article about it.

See You In The Bronx?

So, does a great month constitute a call-up to the bigs soon? In this case, it’s very unlikely. Don’t get me wrong, Spencer Jones is in the Yankees’ long-term plans. The front office and fans alike dream of the day the starting outfield is a rotation of Jones, Jasson Domínguez, Aaron Judge, and Juan Soto – it’s just that today is not that day.

The former Vanderbilt Commodore needs more experience against upper-level pitching. He’s only played in 30 games at the AA level. He has got to prove he can handle the higher ranks of the minors before he gets his shot in the Bronx. However, a promotion to AAA is not out of the question.

At just 22 years old, he’s still well ahead of the curve and projects to get his shot with the Yankees soon.
